Grant Overview
Preserving Wyoming's Cultural Heritage: Risk and Compliance in Rural Preservation Efforts. Wyoming's ranching heritage is at risk due to the aging population of ranchers and the loss of historical records and oral histories. With over 70% of the state's land area dedicated to ranching, preserving this cultural heritage is critical to the state's identity. Wyoming's frontier counties, which cover 90% of the state's land area, face significant challenges in preserving their cultural heritage due to limited infrastructure and resources. The Wyoming Cultural Heritage Preservation initiative addresses these challenges by supporting oral histories, archival digitization, and cultural festivals. Applicants must demonstrate compliance with Wyoming's State Historic Preservation Office guidelines and adhere to the state's risk management protocols for cultural heritage preservation. Unlike Colorado, Wyoming requires demonstration of extreme rural delivery capacity due to its frontier county designation. Wyoming's ranching industry is a significant economic driver, with 50% of the state's workforce employed in agriculture or related fields. The state's rural infrastructure includes a network of 23 frontier counties with limited access to broadband and cultural facilities. Funding will support research projects, teaching initiatives, and resource development that preserve Wyoming's ranching heritage and promote cultural knowledge among rural youth and underserved rancher communities. The initiative will also engage with Wyoming's 7 Native American tribes to ensure cultural sensitivity and relevance. By preserving its cultural heritage, Wyoming aims to promote its unique cultural identity and support the state's rural economies.
