With a population density of just 6 people per square mile, the state's 23 frontier counties face significant barriers to accessing quality STEM education and resources. The state's major industries - ranching and energy production - require a workforce with strong STEM skills, but rural schools often struggle to provide adequate STEM education due to limited resources and infrastructure. A recent survey found that 70% of Wyoming's rural schools reported difficulty recruiting and retaining STEM teachers.
Capacity Gaps in Wyoming's Rural STEM Education
The fellowship program aims to address these capacity gaps by bringing HBCU students to rural Wyoming to engage with local communities and develop STEM education initiatives tailored to the state's industries. Participants will partner with Wyoming's rural schools and organizations to design and implement STEM curricula that address the unique challenges faced by rural communities. This outreach effort aims to promote STEM education and career awareness in underserved areas, with a focus on developing practical skills relevant to Wyoming's economy.
Infrastructure Constraints in Rural Wyoming
Rural Wyoming's infrastructure constraints - including limited broadband connectivity and lack of access to technology - will require participants to be creative and flexible in their approach. The state's rugged terrain and harsh climate also present challenges for data collection and field-based research. Unlike neighboring Colorado, Wyoming's frontier county designation requires participants to demonstrate extreme rural delivery capacity, with a focus on developing solutions that are tailored to these contexts.
Wyoming's Rural Workforce Needs
The fellowship's focus on developing STEM education initiatives tailored to Wyoming's industries aligns with the state's workforce needs. The state's ranching and energy industries require a workforce with strong STEM skills, including data analysis, problem-solving, and technical expertise.
