With only about 5% of the state's population identifying as Black, students often find themselves isolated from cultural networks that are essential for professional growth in the arts. This geographical barrier translates into limited opportunities for mentorship and exposure to diverse artistic practices that are critical for developing a robust craft portfolio.
Black MFA students within Wyoming encounter not only geographic isolation but also systemic barriers that prevent them from accessing vital resources necessary to thrive in their fields. Many institutions in the state lack the range of supportive networks available in more populated regions. This results in a missed opportunity for these students to engage with their cultural heritage through craft disciplines ranging from fiber arts to woodworking. By enabling travel for research expeditions, this program aims to bridge that gap.
