The Wide-Area Coverage grant aims to support the development of a statewide amateur radio network, utilizing Wyoming's geography to push the boundaries of amateur radio communication. Wyoming's Rural Healthcare Landscape is characterized by significant provider shortages, particularly in frontier counties. In fact, a 2019 report found that 23 of Wyoming's counties had fewer than 1 primary care physician per 1,000 residents. The grant will prioritize projects that demonstrate an understanding of these challenges and propose effective solutions. Eligible applicants include amateur radio organizations, non-profits, and local governments with a demonstrated need for improved communication infrastructure. To apply, organizations must submit a detailed proposal outlining their plan for developing a statewide amateur radio network, including technical specifications and a budget breakdown. Wyoming's Frontier County Designation requires applicants to demonstrate extreme rural delivery capacity, unlike neighboring Colorado applications. The grant will focus on areas with high geographic isolation, such as the state's rural counties. Wyoming's economy, driven by energy and tourism, relies heavily on effective communication networks. The state's infrastructure, including its transportation networks and broadband internet, will be taken into account when evaluating grant applications.
