The populations facing this barrier are primarily those in communities that have historically depended on coal mining for employment. Many displaced workers, particularly in rural areas such as Campbell and Sweetwater Counties, experience high unemployment rates, which exceeded 5% in 2021. The demographic composition of these areas, including a higher percentage of older workers close to retirement age, adds to the urgency of the situation. Without targeted retraining initiatives, these individuals may struggle to reenter the workforce, exacerbating economic disparities within the state.
To address these pressing issues, funding from the $100,000 grant will establish a comprehensive workforce training program for renewable energy within Wyoming. This initiative will collaborate with local community colleges, such as Laramie County Community College and Eastern Wyoming College, to create hands-on training opportunities specifically geared towards solar and wind installation. Participants will engage in practical workshops that focus on both the technical skills needed for installation and the knowledge required to maintain renewable energy technologies.
