Wyoming's healthcare landscape is exceptionally unique due to its vast geographical expanse and predominantly rural population. The state ranks among the lowest in the nation for healthcare access, with approximately 66 of its 23 counties classified as frontier counties. This classification indicates severe provider shortages, where healthcare access is impeded by both distance and lack of available services. The sparse population, averaging 6 people per square mile in some rural regions, exacerbates healthcare delivery challenges, particularly in specialized cancer treatment.
The residents facing these challenges include a significant proportion of elderly individuals and those living in remote areas with limited mobility. For example, many cancer patients in Wyoming must travel considerable distances to reach specialized care facilities often located in larger urban centers like Cheyenne or Casper. This travel burden can lead to delays in diagnosis and treatment, leading to poorer outcomes. Moreover, the integration of cutting-edge research into cancer therapy is often non-existent in these rural settings, creating an urgent need for innovative therapeutic approaches that consider the local ecosystem.
The proposed grant aims to develop innovative therapies derived from local microorganisms, focusing on biotechnological applications of bacterial products in cancer treatment. By leveraging Wyoming's unique ecological landscape, we intend to explore novel therapeutic avenues that specifically address the access issues faced by cancer patients in rural areas. This project not only aims to improve treatment access but also enhances Wyoming’s role in biopharmaceutical innovation, positioning the state as a contributor to advanced cancer research.
Expected outcomes of this initiative include the creation of localized microbial therapies tailored to the genetic and clinical profiles of Wyoming residents.
